High Trek Adventure Seattle

Ok, here it is! The High Trek Adventure in Seattle was on Saturday. This is sort of like a mini-Amazing Race in downtown Seattle. You solve clues and then race to win. My mom, Holley, Heidi and I all participated as one group, and it was good that we did on our first race. We learned a lot!

Some of the rules: You had to take a picture of where the clue led you and all team members must be in the photo, unless otherwise noted. The start line was also the finish line. You got 10 clues and 2 bonuses, but you needed to skip one clue (as a gimme) and only solve nine and in any order you wanted (that will come back to bite us, as you will see). We started near Pioneer Square (about two blocks away from Quest Field). So to start we ripped open our packet of clues and took off!! The first clue we solved was:

Q9: Choose This OR That:

This: In honor of the upcoming election, take a picture of one teammate doing a headstand or handstand with a sign showing the first or last name of any one of the United States presidents.

You can see which one we chose, and yes, that is me doing the handstand. (fondly remembering my days of being in gymnastics while all the blood rushed to my head)

The next thing we found was a Bonus:

Find a person wearing the following Seattle area sports team jersey: Huskies, Mariners, Seahawks or Storm. Make sure the person and jersey NUMBER are visible in the photo. You cannot submit multiple numbers. Only the highest number will be accepted. We will deduct minutes off you race time in the following manner: Jersey #'s 0-9 = 0 minutes, 10-19 = 1 minute; 20-29 = 2 minutes, and so on.

As you can see we spotted this little boy and his family attending a fire department gathering on the next block (we started the race next to the Fire Department Headquarters). His mom kindly let us take a picture with him. His little brother was very disappointed he couldn't be in the photo and kept running through the picture. His little brother was wearing a Boston Red Sox jersey (seriously, who allows their kids to wear such stuff???).

We then headed down to the waterfront and Q5:

Game Over. . .Head to the Water Front Arcade where you'll need to play any game where you can win tickets. You must play until you win 7 tickets. You must bring back the 7 tickets to 88 Keys (the bar we started at) in order to receive credit for this TREKpoint. You must take a photo of at least one team member playing a game.

Holley has this photo on her phone because I was having technical difficulties with the camera on Andy's phone. But my mom did this clue and in great time. She played Whack-a-Mole and got more than 7 tickets the first time she played. Go Mom!!!!

Our next clue we headed off to was Q8:

Fame! I'm gonna live forever. . .head to Seattle's Walk of Fame located downtown. Find the person who moved to Seattle with his family at the tender age of ten, produced Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and was the conductor for the song We Are The World.

Through Andy's help (we called him) and the concierge desk at the Westin we realized that the person was Quincy Jones and the Walk of Fame in Seattle is located around the Nordstroms downtown. This is the Quincy Jones Walk of Fame close-up.

Q7: That's so cheesy. . .unscramble the anagram below to figure out the two word establishment located on Thomas in the South Lake Union District.

Adz Ma Zip

I was on the phone to Andy (asking about Quincy Jones) when I realized you could spell the word pizza out of those letters. The only letters left were Mad, so we headed off to Mad Pizza where we each got a free slice of pizza (thankfully, because we were starving by this point!)

Q3: So you think you can dance. . .located on the sidewalk on Broadway in Capitol Hill, find the step-by-step instructions to do the Tango.

We found this pretty quickly considering there is A LOT of sidewalk on Broadway!

Close up of the steps. They have different dance steps for a lot of different dances all along the sidewalk.

Q6: Wait a minute, can you take my photo?. . .solve the math problem below to find the address of the TREKpoint located on 14th Avenue in Capitol Hill. Number of minutes in two quarters of a regulation Seahawks game (30-asked a guy on the street)PLUS the number of minutes JT and Madonna have to save the world (4-thank goodness for Heidi and Holley, because I had NO clue) THEN MULTIPLIED BY Ichiro's jersey number (51-called Andy because I couldn't remember, too much pressure!). FINALLY, SUBTRACT 209.

This is where we ended up. It's actually a camera store, although you can't tell because we just got the address and not the sign!

Q10: Sign of Peace. . .head to Seattle University's campus where you'll need to find the MAY PEACE PREVAIL ON EARTH sign located in a little garden.

No problems with this one!

Now, by this point we have decided to skip Q2, which read: Is it a trendy teacher?. . .located along the Seattle Streetcar South Lake Union route where both tracks run on the same street. Solve the following and it'll reveal the next two-word TREKpoint. HINT: both words below are their abbreviated versions:

1st word: 1/2 jigger lime juice

1 jigger vodka (Absolut Citron vodka is best)

1 jigger Triple Sec

1 jigger Cranberry Juice Cocktail

2nd word: university lecturer

We figured this one out, but didn't know that we had. We did keep thinking Cosmo (thanks Holley and Heidi again) and of course professor or prof, but it didn't make sense. We also thought of Cosmo Dock (because Doc is short for doctor and usually professors have their doctorate and they did say by South Lake Union). But it turns out it was CosmoProf which is a beauty supply company of some sort. (I looked it up afterward)

Anyway, we had long ago decided to skip that one, which meant we had only two left.

Q1: Gas guzzler. . .With no end in sight of rising gasoline prices this next TREKpoint requires you and your team to find a gas station with a price equal to or under $4.50 (any grade of gasoline will do).

This was no easy feat, especially in a downtown area. We had kept our eyes open as we had walked but had only seen one gas station and it's price was $4.51. So we decided to do the other clue and then hop on a bus to go to the first gas station we saw that worked and then finish.

Q4: This TREKpoint is mandatory. . .head to Kobe Terrace Park where you'll find a High Trek Adventure creative Team Member. Once you locate him/her you will be asked a trivia question. You must answer one trivia question correctly before you can advance to the next TREKpoint. If you get it wrong you must stay until you answer one correctly. Take a picture of the person asking the question to prove that you were there. NOTE: This TREKpoint will close at 2:30p.m.

Now you may wonder why I don't have a picture of this TREKpoint? Because we didn't read the clue completely and ended up at Kobe Park shortly after 3 p.m. What a bummer ending to all that hard work!!! We realized that we were done, we couldn't go back and do Q2 because Q4 was mandatory and it automatically ended us right there. So, instead of finding a gas station we just headed in and finished with a time of 3 hours 21 minutes and 4 seconds. We did a big loop around Seattle and ended up walking 6.12 miles (we never took public transportation, which you can do, and will do for next time). If you would like to see the route we took look here. The weather was 84 degrees that day, which made it nice but so much harder to do! (believe me, it felt much hotter!)

So, one High Trek Adventure down and two scheduled for next year! (At least according to ME!)

That sounds like so much fun! I want to do it!!!!!!!!!!! Wouldn't it be fun if I really could fly there and manage not to die during the running around portion? Seriously, when's the next one? :)
